VCE Physics Stars and Black Holes

VCE Physics; Unit 2, Area of Study 2, Option 2.13

The stars of the night sky have captured human imagination for millenia. In this hands-on program, students consider how astronomers analyse stars and black holes using spectroscopes, spectrometers and VSSEC’s radio telescope.

Students:

  • Operate a real, dedicated radio telescope to image an unknown celestial object
  • Use Stellarium software to compare the unknown object to known objects and propose its classification
  • Use spectroscopes to determine the gases inside spectral lamps
  • Use spectrometers to analyse the sun’s composition and determine its temperature
  • NOTE: SMALL class groups less than 12 students may  be accommodated even though date is blocked, to enquire
