In December 1990 six adult Japanese tree frogs were sent to the Mir Space Station for eight days, as part of the Frogs in Space (FRIS) project, to observe and record their behaviour in microgravity. We are delighted that one of the Japanese scientists, Assoc. Prof. Izumi-Kurotani from JAXA, has made video footage and photographs from this experiment available for the Frogs in Orbit Outreach program.

The Frogs in Orbit Outreach program was developed collaboratively between VSSEC, Ecolinc, and JAXA for year 9 and 10 students. Frogs in Orbit is a hands-on program which links biotechnology; space science; neuroscience; resource management and green chemistry; and habitat renewal. The program consists of nine lessons:

  • Lesson 1: Frogs- Anatomy and Physiology
  • Lesson 2: Frogs - Identification
  • Lesson 3: Frogs - Conservation
  • Lesson 4: Frogs - Habitat Survey
  • Lesson 5: Life in Space
  • Lesson 6: History of Animals in Space
  • Lesson 7: Ethics of Animal Research
  • Lesson 8: Keeping Animals in Space
  • Lesson 9: Frogs in Space
