Primary Expedition to the M.A.R.S. Base is an immersive space science experience for Grade 5 & 6 students. The program delivers a scenario-based learning environment that engages the students in a wide range of science activities, uses sophisticated computer and communications technology and strongly encourages collaborative learning and teamwork. This program provides a rich experience in science and builds core skills as defined in the Victorian Essential Learning Standards (VELS) Level 4. The program consists of a pre-visit, school-based component to prepare the students, and a visit to VSSEC where students complete two missions; one as an astronaut and one as a mission controller.

To enhance the experience, students don flight suits and watch a movie to fly them to Mars. As well as flying them to Mars the movie sets the scene for their scientific mission.

In Mission Control students are responsible for monitoring an aspect of the base: air supply; water supply; power supply; robot control; climate; and communications. Mission controllers can observe the astronauts working in the M.A.R.S. Base while they use interactive software to monitor their systems and complete related activities.

In the M.A.R.S. Basethe astronauts work in pairs at science tasks, communicating their results to Mission Controlvia a dedicated web page until the mission-ending problem arises. Each bay is equipped with everything the students need to complete a scientific investigation. The activities cover science concepts specified in VELS Level 4 and represent real science, techniques and ideas that are within their grasp.
