Teacher Professional Learning  ›  Teaching Science in Context and the E5 Instructional Model

Participants develop skills using the E5 Instructional Model to provide an engaging environment for teaching science. The program uses VSSEC’s Mission to the Orbiting Space Laboratory (MOSL) to demonstrate the increased engagement of students where science is taught within a relevant context.

Date: Wednesday 22nd July 2009
Time: 9:30 – 3:00
Cost: $140 plus GST
Maximum participants: : 24
RSVP: Friday 13th July 2009

The E5 Instructional Model, (Engage, Explore, Explain, Expand, Evaluate), has been embraced by DEECD as an effective strategy for engaging students in science. The program demonstrates how VSSEC uses this Model and the scenario of a mission to an orbiting space laboratory to connect students to physics, engineering, biology, chemistry and environmental sciences.

With the support of VSSEC staff, teachers will develop their own scenarios to immerse their students in a full range of scientific disciplines.

Guest speaker

The MOSL program teaches human physiology within the context of astronaut physical assessment. To extend understanding of the science in the example scenario Dr Alan Hayes, from Victoria University’s Department of Biomedical Sciences, will present some of the latest findings on muscle atrophication and loss of bone density due to calcium depletion

Participants will receive a $50 voucher for any Mission to the Space Laboratory Program in 2009
